The Mission Rock Dossier

Recovered footage from Sonilo's Tech Week party. The bay is already too quiet.

You arrive at Sonilo's Tech Week party on the Mission Rock pier, hosted by Cindy Xu. The night is still a party. String lights, cocktails, and investor chatter hold. The bay beyond the rail is too dark and too still, framed like a held breath. The footage you are in is a recovered camcorder. The creature is not here yet.

Cast

The Monster

Marine horror, still offshore · Primary threat

A colossal marine horror is moving toward Mission Rock and is not at the party yet. The first honest look is a news image and, through the window to the left of that screen, a dark rise on the water no bigger than a boat. Closer footage, when it exists, never holds the whole body: many jaws, crown-like ridges, wet tendrils, blue-lit eyes, spray. It does not pose. It is a fragment that keeps arriving.

Cindy Xu

Sonilo host · Host

Cindy Xu is hosting Sonilo's Tech Week night on the pier and still believes she can keep it intact. She knows the room by name, keeps the pours moving, and treats a glance at the water as a pause in the program, not a warning. The camera knows her as a phone close-up: rose-gold hair, navy silk, choker, party lights behind her. When the hall turns to the news, her poise is the last thing in the room that has not flinched.

Sonilo Dog

Colossal cute speaker · Speaks from the bay

A white curly dog the size of the marine horror, still wearing the blue plush hat and vest from the Sonilo spots. It is not in the opening rooms. When the footage catches it, the pier is a line of lights under its chest and it is already talking: bright, eager, delighted to be enormous. Cute does not make it small.

Sonilo Cat

Colossal cute speaker · Speaks from the bay

A tabby the size of the marine horror, in the same blue hat and vest, green eyes level with the camcorder. It arrives as a fragment over the water and it speaks anyway: dry, precise, a little amused that everyone is still holding a drink. It does not hiss. It explains.

Places

Amber Canopy Dining Deck

You step onto the upper deck under the amber canopy. String lights, turquoise stools, candles on the tables. Cindy is in the mix, still hosting, and the Sonilo crowd is talking to itself. Past the rail the bay is black and level. Nothing is rising. The camcorder's REC dot is already on.

Lower Pier Bar

The lower bar sits on the wood over the water, looser than the deck above. Drinks, an orange awning, people lingering at the cable rail. Under the pier the bay is black and flat. The party feels close to the water and not yet afraid of it.

North Waterfront Rail

Along the north rail the crowd is a line of conversations, shoulders toward each other, the orange canopy farther down the pier. A wide stretch of dark bay sits beyond them with no wake in it. Someone laughs. The water does not answer.

Cocktail Service Bar

At the service window a bartender is still pouring. Bottles, shakers, a green bar mat, faces soft in the low light. Through the opening the pier lights are steady. The chalkboard is a blur. Nothing outside is breaking.

Awning Court

The court under the yellow glass room is only half occupied. Colored chairs wait. A few guests stand with drinks. At the far end the night opens onto dark water, and there is nothing in it.

Glass-Walled Event Hall

Dinner is still in progress in the glass-walled hall. White cloth, yellow flowers, the ship's wheel on the far wall, Cindy somewhere in the circuit of the room. Through the windows the bay is dark and quiet. The night has not announced itself.

News Screen

Later, still before the pier is hit, the hall has turned toward a large screen. Guests huddle in front of a news broadcast of the waterfront. On the screen something small is moving across the bay toward this place. Immediately left of the screen, the real window shows that same shape: a dark rise on the water, barely there, no bigger than a distant boat. Nobody is running yet. Everyone is watching.

Lore

Setting▾

A real two-level waterfront restaurant built over the bay at Mission Rock, at night, during a private Sonilo showcase. Amber canopies, turquoise stools, wood rails, a glass-walled dining room, a service bar, and an awning court. Every recovered frame carries a small REC mark and a timestamp. The water stays empty until a later frame.

History▾

Sonilo, a fictional company, spent months staging this night for founders, press, and investors. Cindy turned the restaurant into a social theater: names, pours, and a view sold as the product. The openness that makes the party beautiful is the same openness that will later make it a trap. The dossier is the footage people kept recording instead of leaving.

Factions▾

Cindy Xu, still hosting. Anonymous guests — founders, investors, plus-ones — who have not started running. Venue staff who know the back routes and are still pouring. A news broadcast that reaches the hall before the pier does. The creature, still offshore, known first as a rumor on a screen.

Conflict▾

Spectacle against the instinct to leave. The party still feels like the story, and the bay is only wrong if you look at it. Once the hall puts on the news, you can see the same distant shape through the window to the left of the screen, barely there, coming toward the pier. Recording it and getting off the wood are starting to be different choices.

Rules▾

Opening places are not the attack. Guests talk and drink. Nobody runs. No spray wall, no dust, no sirens, no fallen furniture, no creature in the water. Frame the bay so something could rise later, and leave it empty. The News Screen is the first confirmation: the broadcast shows the creature small and approaching; the real window immediately left of the screen shows that same shape no bigger than a distant boat. Do not bring it into the room. Violence stays PG-13. Found-footage logic on every frame: one consumer camera, REC, timestamp, limited visibility, no steadicam, no title card, no readable signs. Sonilo lettering stays unreadable. Do not name a film.

Return visits▾

These residents stay. Return visits are supposed to feel like rewatching — same faces, same hall, a new choice if you want one.
