Premise
In the canal-threaded city of Jaipur, certain jewels absorb echoes of promises, grief, bargains, and love. These memory-jewels power old wards, guide lost travelers, and tempt smugglers who would rewrite the city’s past for profit. Guests enter the pink city’s winding lanes and follow uncanny entities through bazaars, courtyards, rooftops, and water-stairs in search of the fabled Jewel of Jaipur.
Setting
The Jewel of Jaipur is a fantastical version of a desert trade city transformed by hidden waterways, stepwells, elevated walkways, crowded bazaars, and ancient mansions divided into workshops and boarding houses. The city is layered: sunstruck rooftops by day, lamp-glossed canals by night, and cool subterranean cisterns where echoes gather around old stone.
History
Long ago, Jaipur survived a devastating dry season when artisans and water diviners forged the First Lattice, a civic network of cisterns, canals, and resonance stones that stored not only water but communal vows of stewardship. Over generations, guild families learned that some jewels could retain emotional imprints. These were first used to preserve oaths, settle disputes, and anchor protective thresholds. As trade expanded, private collectors and political houses began hoarding stronger stones, creating class tensions between those who controlled memory and those who lived inside its consequences. A recent fracture in the city’s oldest reservoir has made forgotten promises unstable, causing memories to seep into streets, objects, and reflections.
Factions
The River-Keepers maintain canals, stepwells, and old civic wards, believing memory-jewels belong to the city as a whole. The Brass Ledger Guild catalogs appraisals, transit rights, and bonded jewel trades, insisting order prevents chaos even as some members profit from secrecy. The Mirror Market smuggling web traffics in unstable stones, forged histories, and private bargains, treating memory as a commodity for the highest bidder.
Conflict
As unstable memory-jewels begin releasing fragments into public spaces, competing groups race to secure them. The central struggle is between communal memory and private ownership: should the city’s living history belong to everyone, or can it be bought, edited, and weaponized? Personal stakes intertwine with civic danger as lost family truths, broken pacts, and political sabotage surface.
Rules
Magic is subtle, civic, and woven into daily life. Memory-jewels glow, chime, or alter reflections when stirred by strong feeling or broken promises. Spirits are mysterious but not omnipotent; they guide, mislead, observe, or test rather than solve problems outright. The city responds to attention: routes seem to shift, thresholds reveal themselves, and objects remember touch, but always within a grounded human world. Keep peril and eeriness PG-13 without gore or explicit violence.

These residents stay. Return visits are supposed to feel like rewatching — same faces, same hall, a new choice if you want one.

Residents

The Lantern Jackal

Guide spirit · Mysterious guide

A long-limbed, quiet entity with a brushed-clay masklike face, brass lantern charms at its neck, and a habit of appearing at forks in the lane just before a choice must be made. It never speaks aloud. Instead, nearby metal chimes, reflected light, and wavering flame seem to answer for it. The Lantern Jackal leads only those who are lost for a reason, and it is said to remember every promise ever made beneath an archway.

The Well Listener

Memory keeper · Keeper of hidden truths

An old civic entity that dwells near stepwells and cistern mouths, taking shape from pooled reflections, dropped coins, and unfinished thoughts. It appears when someone asks the water a question they are not ready to hear answered. Unlike the city’s lighter spirits, the Well Listener is patient and grave. It offers glimpses of memory-jewels, broken vows, and submerged routes through the old city, but every answer arrives beside a harder truth.

The Balcony Threader

Rooftop watcher · Pathfinder spirit

A narrow, ribbon-bodied lane spirit that moves between balconies, clotheslines, and carved screens like a loose strip of dusk. It knots wind, lifts curtains, tangles purses, and reveals hidden windows to travelers who have the right question but the wrong route. Vendors leave cups of sweet milk for it on ledges. Children claim it steals lies from overheard conversations and weaves them into warning tassels.

Places

Canal Step Bazaar

You arrive at the canal steps where spice stalls, brass lamps, and hanging fabric crowd the water. A vendor is already wrapping a parcel that chimes like glass. Begin with the guest noticing a jewel-glint in the canal that should not be there, then choosing whether to buy the parcel, follow the vendor's glance, or step onto the wet stones.

Kite Terrace Haveli

You reach a haveli rooftop at late afternoon where kites and drying cloth snap in the wind. The pink city stretches below. Someone has left a ledger open to a page that names a jewel and a time. Begin with the guest deciding whether to wait for the owner, read the ledger, or follow a kite string into the next courtyard.
